Mackerel cooks in an air fryer at 180°C (355°F) for 12~15 min. Preheat first, and flip once halfway. Flesh turns opaque and flakes when pressed
An air fryer keeps fish smell out of the kitchen far better than a pan. The one nuisance is skin sticking — cut a piece of parchment to the size of the fish, or oil the skin lightly. Salting the dried surface ten minutes ahead cuts the fishy smell.
Times are for a half fish. A whole mackerel needs about eighteen minutes; add five more from frozen.

What usually goes wrong
- Skin down on a bare basket — it sticks and shreds
- Not patting it dry — stronger fishy smell
- Overcooking — dry, chalky flesh
